Fostering a Solid Mental Health Routine: The Foundation of Professional Success

By Rachel O'Hagan, MacLachlan College Alumni Relations Manager and Yoga Instructor

In today’s fast-paced world, maintaining a strong mental health routine is not just beneficial; it's essential for sustained professional success. Throughout my conversations with numerous successful alumni, a common theme emerges: the critical role of self-care in their professional journeys.

As both the Alumni Relations Manager at MacLachlan College and a certified yoga instructor and Mindful Self-Compassion teacher, I personally integrate these practices into my daily life. This holistic approach helps me perform at my best, whether I'm at work, at home as a mom and caregiver, or simply moving through life as a human being wanting to feel good in all that I do.
Tailored Strategies for Mental Wellness:

Regular Physical Activity: Exercise is a powerful stress reliever. Whether it’s a morning jog, a yoga class after work, or a weekend hiking trip, physical activity releases endorphins, improves mood, and clears the mind.

Mindfulness and Meditation: Many professionals have turned to mindfulness practices to enhance focus and reduce stress. Apps like Headspace or Calm offer guided meditations that fit into any schedule.

Professional Counseling: Utilizing therapy or counseling services can provide a safe space to navigate career pressures and personal challenges. Many companies now offer employee assistance programs that include mental health services.

Networking and Social Groups: Joining professional or hobby-based groups can provide emotional support and decrease feelings of isolation. This connection is vital in maintaining an overall sense of well-being.

Scheduled Downtime: It’s crucial to schedule time to unwind and disconnect from work-related activities. This could mean setting boundaries on work communications after hours or dedicating weekends to family and leisure activities.

Skill Development Workshops: Engaging in workshops and continuous learning not only advances one's career but also boosts mental health by providing a sense of progress and achievement.

Insights from Victoria Dawn, MacLachlan College Wellness Lead:
At MacLachlan College, our commitment to student well-being extends beyond the classroom. Victoria Dawn, MacLachlan College’s Wellness Lead, emphasizes the importance of positive mental health for academic achievement and overall well-being:

"More research is surfacing on the impact of positive mental health on academic achievement, effective life skills, and overall well-being for all students. When stress is reduced, students can store and recall information more effectively, which means they will learn more and have a tool if they blank on a test. Mindfulness helps students learn to take a pause when they feel upset or overwhelmed, during which thoughtful responses can replace impulsive reactions. This supports students’ self-care and increases their success when working and interacting with others."

As we navigate the demands of professional life, let us prioritize our mental wellness with the same dedication we apply to our careers. By incorporating tailored strategies for mental health and embracing initiatives like mindfulness programs, we not only enhance our professional success but also cultivate a fulfilling and balanced life. Remember, your mind is your greatest asset—nurture it.
