Wonder happens when we put our minds together

One year ago my January blog post shared the Sitting Bull quote, “Let us put our minds together and see what life we can make for our children.”

It gives me enormous pleasure to report that as we open the books on 2022 our entire MAC family did indeed put our minds together for the benefit of our students. And, although the year is not opening as we had hoped, our ability to deliver a robust, rapid, remote-learning program is a good example of the benefit of purpose.

During this past year I witnessed how powerful it is to pursue a mission with purpose.

I experienced this on both a professional and personal level. I believe there is little distinction between one’s personal and professional purpose. Early in our careers, we were encouraged to give our all to the business in order to climb the ladder of ‘success’. We then moved on to attempting to find the elusive work/life balance.

In retrospect this was probably a fruitless task.

I, along with many of my friends and colleagues now firmly embrace the notion and practice of work/life integration. When you see your way clear to recognize the peace that this can deliver to your life you are better able to live a life of purpose and lead an organization that is purpose driven.

So what is a purpose-driven organization?

The one thing purpose-driven organizations have in common is a clear understanding of what they stand for and a conscious determination to take a stand in ways that create long-term value for all the people they serve.

The people we serve are our students, their parents, our teachers and our staff, our supporters, our education colleagues and our greater community. Every thing we do, every decision we make, every change in direction we pursue is driven by our vision to challenge and explore the limitations of traditional education. We continually innovate and develop a bold and creative vision that promotes an entrepreneurial, success-driven and future-oriented mindset. We then commit to integrating the MAC approach into every aspect of school life.

Our purpose is to re-imagine possibilities. To enable, empower and educate young people who will possess the talent, knowledge and skills to meet the demands of a constantly evolving future with enthusiasm, resilience and courage.

And, where the wonder really happens is when we witness personal and professional purpose synchronize for the benefit of all.

I have seen teachers go well beyond what would normally be expected in order to create a superior experience for the children in their classes. I have witnessed students at every grade level take courageous initiative in pursuing a particular challenge or a personal interest. I have watched members of MAC’s leadership teams take leaps of faith in the face of imposing challenges.

I believe this all happens because we have genuinely created a community where our unity of purpose delivers wonder.
