  • Assistant Head, Lower School - Academics

    As a member of the Administration Team and the Primary Years Programme (PYP) Coordinator, The Assistant Head with a focus on academics is responsible for working closely with the Head of School and Deputy Head of School focusing on the Lower School (PK-6). They will assist with supporting students and staff within the Lower School, oversee PYP curriculum, co-chair the Lower School divisional meetings along with the Assistant Head of Lower School-Student Life, and conduct other divisional responsibilities as assigned by the Head or Deputy Head of School. As a visible leader within the Lower School, the Assistant Head will maintain good client relations through their interaction with students, parents, staff and the larger community. They will actively promote the mission, vision and values of MacLachlan College through their words and actions.
     
    Key Responsibilities:
    • Actively support students and staff within the Lower School regarding PYP programs
    • Participate in school recruitment fairs and MacLachlan College Open Houses
    • Collaborate on The Report Writing Policy Manual annually
    • Assist in the review and development of PYP policies and procedures
    • Adhere to the IB PYP philosophy and curriculum framework and apply it with fidelity to division practices.
    • Develop and continually review of the PYP – POI (Programme of Inquiry)
    • Lead the preparation for MacLachlan College’s IB Evaluation Visits
    • Actively assist with the preparation for in service of Ministry of Education and IBO policies and curriculum documents
    • Co-chair the LS divisional meetings
    • Assist with the planning of the Grade 6 Exhibition and any parent event or celebration that will be part of the Exhibition
    • Ensure that staff are informed and complete in-service training regarding updates to the PYP programme
    • Maintain communication and direct the Primary and Junior Leads in the development of common planning time and grade specific meetings and agendas
    • Participate in the delivery of the Staff Development program
    • Participate in the process of hiring staff (resume reading & interviewing)
    • Assist in the development and delivery of the New Staff Orientation Days 
    • Assist the Deputy Head with the staff Professional Growth and Development Program
    • Work with and in support of the subject and homeroom teachers
     
    Teaching Accountability:
    • 25% - 30% of teaching timetable
     
    Skills and Qualifications:
    • Post-Secondary Education and Teaching Qualifications
    • Minimum of 10 years of Experience
    • Master’s in Education an asset
    • Completion of at least Part 1 Principal or equivalent qualifications or be enrolled in the course
    • Minimum of at least 5 years experience teaching in an IB-PYP school
    • Leadership experience in an educational setting with direct oversight of faculty
    • Experience in an independent educational institution an asset
    • Strong technical skills and knowledge of digital systems in education

  • Assistant Head, Lower School - Student Life

They will assist with supporting students and staff within the Lower School, oversee student concerns and discipline, co-chair the Lower School divisional meetings along with the Assistant Head of Lower School-Academics, and conduct other divisional responsibilities as assigned by the Head or Deputy Head of School. As a visible leader within the Lower School, the Assistant Head will maintain good client relations through their interaction with students, parents, staff and the larger community. They will actively promote the mission, vision and values of MacLachlan College through their words and actions.
     
    Key Responsibilities:
    • Actively support students and staff within the Lower School regarding student programs/activities
    • Participate in school recruitment fairs and MacLachlan College Open Houses
    • Collaborate on The Report Writing Policy Manual annually
    • Assist in the interviewing and assessment of student suitability for the purpose of making recommendations for offers of admission or rationale for declining enrolment, including being available over the summer, as required, on occasion, for student assessments and intake
    • Assist with the planning of the Grade 6 Graduation and any parent event or celebration that will be part of the Lower School
    • Support division initiatives and extracurriculars
    • Monitor classrooms to ensure that they remain tidy and have appropriate and current room displays
    • Participate in the process of hiring staff (resume reading & interviewing)
    • Assist in the development and delivery of the New Staff Orientation Days 
    • Work with and in support of the subject and homeroom teachers
    • Perform the role of second line of discipline and coordinate common responses and solutions to discipline concerns in the Lower School      
    • Oversee student discipline strategies and address chronic issues by meeting with student and/or parents as the Deputy Head’s designate
    • Together with the Deputy Head, participate in an end of November, early December review of students for re-enrolment, oversee student compliance with uniform standards and assist all teachers in enforcing these standards
    • Assist the Deputy Head with the staff Professional Growth and Development Program

    • An Ontario Teaching Certificate (Good Standing)
    • Subject specific qualifications and willingness to gain additional levels
    • Prior experience teaching the Ontario and/or PYP Curriculum
    • Considerable knowledge of the “Growing Success” assessment policy document
    • Familiarity with SMARTBoard, iPad technology, Teams, Toddle and Atlas Rubicon curriculum mapping 
    • Experience related to running or supporting co-curricular activities
