Learning Through Service: Highlights from Costa Rica

A group of MacLachlan College students and staff embarked on an service learning trip to Costa Rica, immersing themselves in local culture, conservation efforts, and community service.

They explored the community of Gandoca, learning about Costa Rican history and enjoying a local dance performance. From picking cocoa beans and making chocolate to patrolling the beach for sea turtles, each day was a hands-on experience. Students also took a Spanish lesson, made traditional tamales, and helped paint fences at a local elementary school. The trip ended with an 11-kilometer jungle trek to Manzanillo Beach, where they swam in the ocean and reflected on their journey.

This trip fostered a deep appreciation for global citizenship, sustainability, and cultural exchange, leaving students with lifelong memories and a renewed commitment to making a positive impact in the world.
