Lessons in Leadership

By Rachel O’Hagan, Alumni Relations Manager\

Last month, I had the privilege of being a part of something truly special—our alumni returning to MacLachlan, not just as guests, but as mentors, role models, and leaders. Listening to them share their journeys filled me with immense pride and gratitude. Their stories of perseverance, resilience, and success reinforced what makes this community we are building so exceptional.

A New Tradition: The Alumni Leadership Conference

Our first-ever Alumni Leadership Conference brought Grade 11 and 12 students together with accomplished MacLachlan graduates for an unforgettable day of mentorship and growth. The event kicked off with an inspiring speech from our founder, Audrey Hadfield, followed by a panel discussion where alumni reflected on their leadership experiences, the obstacles they’ve overcome, and the lessons they’ve carried forward.

In the afternoon, students worked in small groups with alumni, tackling real-world challenges in career exploration, networking, and conflict resolution. The impact was undeniable—our students walked away with invaluable insights and a renewed sense of confidence in their future paths.

Alumni Spotlight: Matthew Holland ‘09

Matthew Holland’s journey from MacLachlan student to civil engineer is a testament to the lifelong values instilled here. A dedicated member of the Sumner Sharks, a debate team standout, and his class valedictorian, Matthew’s leadership extended far beyond the classroom.
After earning his Civil Engineering degree at McMaster University, he pursued a career dedicated to community development. His work on major infrastructure projects and his commitment to mentorship, including earning the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, reflect his unwavering dedication to giving back. Today, Matthew is preparing for his most exciting role yet—becoming a father. His journey is a reminder that leadership, service, and personal growth don’t end at graduation; they evolve with us.

Floor Hockey, Friendly Rivalries, and a Staff Victory!

Our Alumni Floor Hockey Tournament was another highlight of the month, bringing together past and present MacLachlan community members for some competitive fun. A special thank you to Mr. Seidenberg, who came out of retirement to play goalie, making the event even more memorable.
Despite the alumni’s best efforts, the full staff team—The Habs—took home the championship title this year. Alumni, consider this your official challenge: Let’s see you reclaim the cup next year!

Looking Ahead

These events remind us why MacLachlan is more than a school—it’s a lifelong community. I am grateful for the alumni and staff who work hard to build connections and give back, sharing their wisdom, experiences, and time.

We can’t wait to welcome even more of you back for future events. Until then, keep leading, keep inspiring, and know that MacLachlan is always your home.
