I am a professional theatre director. As I write this in the summer of 2022, the most recent show I directed is HAMLET at the Stratford Festival Theatre in Stratford, ON. I didn't know I would end up doing this.
I went to Ryerson University (recently renamed Toronto Metropolitan University) Though I had a good art and drama education at MacLachlan, this was not my expected path. Now that I think back to my passion for drama class, and the plays that I took part in, my career path seems inevitable. We planted the seeds early.
I remember meeting astronaut Roberta Bondar at the science fair when I was in science project and finally said to me "you are going places". I don't think I ended up where she was imagining, but it was a great experience. I went to MacLachlan from Grade 1 through to O.A.C. so the school really shaped me. From learning to tie a tie for myself, to excelling at calculus, to producing my theatre productions. It all prepped me for the real world.
Looking back, I think one of the most valuable aspects of the school is the student gets much more individual attention from the teacher. This goes a long way to encourage a student's development. At least it did for me.
To prepare future-ready individuals, we need to share and instill common values across our school community and embed these values in everything we do.
